Experience Rwanda's extraordinary mountain primates on this 5-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari, an immersive journey centered around Volcanoes National Park. Designed for travelers who want more than a single gorilla encounter, the itinerary provides opportunities for two gorilla trekking experiences, a golden monkey encounter, and time to explore the landscapes and communities surrounding the Virunga Mountains.

Your journey begins in Kigali before traveling north to Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas and one of the world's most remarkable primate habitats. Each gorilla trek is a unique experience because the gorilla families move through the forest and the difficulty of the trek depends on their location.

A second trek provides another opportunity to observe these magnificent animals while experiencing a different part of the mountain forest. You will also trek in search of playful golden monkeys, another endangered primate found in the Virunga ecosystem.

Travel throughout the trip in a comfortable pop-up roof 4x4 vehicle with an experienced professional guide. The itinerary balances demanding trekking days with time to relax, making it particularly suitable for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, couples, and travelers looking for an intimate Rwanda primate experience.

Day 1

Kigali – Volcanoes National Park

Your Rwanda adventure begins with a morning pickup from your hotel or Kigali International Airport. Meet your professional safari guide and begin the scenic journey north toward Volcanoes National Park. The drive takes you through Rwanda's famously beautiful rolling hills, agricultural landscapes, villages, and local communities as you approach the Virunga Mountains.

Arrive in the Musanze area and check into your comfortable lodge. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a relaxed afternoon or choose an optional local experience such as a community visit, cultural activity, or nature walk. Your guide will also brief you about the following day's gorilla trek, including what to expect, appropriate clothing, and trekking preparations.

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Transport: Pop-up roof 4x4 vehicle — approximately 105 km / 2.5–3 hours from Kigali.

Day 2

First Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, travel to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. Once assigned to a gorilla family, begin your trek into the forest accompanied by experienced trackers and park guides. The trek can range from relatively easy to physically demanding depending on where the gorillas are located.

Once you find your assigned family, spend your permitted viewing time observing their behavior as they feed, rest, play, groom, and interact with one another. The experience offers extraordinary insight into the social lives of these endangered great apes. After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation following your forest adventure.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Transport: Pop-up roof 4x4 vehicle — short transfers between lodge and park headquarters; trekking time varies according to gorilla location and trail conditions.

Day 3

Golden Monkey Trekking & Relaxation

Begin another memorable primate experience with an early morning transfer to the park headquarters for your golden monkey trekking briefing. Enter the bamboo forest with experienced trackers in search of the endangered golden monkeys, known for their striking golden-orange coats and energetic behavior.

The trek provides a very different experience from gorilla trekking as golden monkeys are often active and move quickly through the bamboo. After your encounter, return to the lodge for lunch and a well-earned afternoon at leisure. Relax, enjoy the mountain views, or choose an optional cultural or wellness activity depending on availability.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Transport: Pop-up roof 4x4 vehicle — short transfers to and from the park headquarters; trekking duration varies according to wildlife location.

Day 4

Second Gorilla Trekking Experience

Today provides your second opportunity to trek in search of mountain gorillas. After breakfast, return to Volcanoes National Park headquarters for another briefing before entering the forest with your trekking team. Because gorilla families have their own movements, social structures, and personalities, this second trek can provide a completely different experience from the first.

Spend your permitted viewing time observing the gorillas in their natural environment, watching interactions between adults, juveniles, and infants while learning from your trackers and guides. Return to your lodge after the trek for lunch and an afternoon to relax, reflect on the experience, or enjoy the surrounding volcanic landscape.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Transport: Pop-up roof 4x4 vehicle — short transfers between the lodge and park headquarters; trekking distance and duration depend on the assigned gorilla family.

Day 5

Volcanoes National Park – Kigali

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge before beginning the scenic drive back to Kigali. The journey provides another opportunity to appreciate Rwanda's green hills, cultivated landscapes, and rural communities. Depending on your departure schedule, you may have time for an optional Kigali city experience, craft market visit, or cultural stop before your final transfer.

Arrive in Kigali and transfer to your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your 5-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Safari. You'll leave with memories of intimate encounters with mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in one of Africa's most remarkable conservation landscapes.

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
